Waiting on Wednesday (87)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we’re eagerly anticipating.

Once again, Usagi is not here for comment/WoW pick, so it’s just little old Ashleigh. YA contemporary is one of my very favorite things in the whole wide world and this one caught my eye from the moment I saw it in the Macmillan catalog. Dead people! Letters! If it’s in epistolary the whole way through (I looooooove epistolary novels), I might just die. Since I have an ARC, I hope to start it soon and see if it lives up to my expectations.

Love Letters to the Dead - Ava DellairaTitle: Love Letters to the Dead
Author: Ava Dellaria
Publisher: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux
Release Date: April 1, 2014
Jacket Copy: It begins as an assignment for English class: Write a letter to a dead person. Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May did. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to people like Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Amelia Earhart, Heath Ledger, and more; though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating new friendships, falling in love for the first time, learning to live with her splintering family. And, finally, about the abuse she suffered while May was supposed to be looking out for her. Only then, once Laurel has written down the truth about what happened to herself, can she truly begin to accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was; lovely and amazing and deeply flawed; can she begin to discover her own path.

Cruel Beauty♡ Title: Cruel Beauty

♡ Author: Rosamund hedge

♡ Release Date: January 21, 2014

♡ Publisher: Balzer + Bray

♡ Synopsis: Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom—all because of a reckless bargain her father struck. And since birth, she has been training to kill him.

Betrayed by her family yet bound to obey, Nyx rails against her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, she abandons everything she’s ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, disarm him, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle—a shifting maze of magical rooms—enthralls her. As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex’s secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. But even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, could she refuse her duty to kill him?

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

♡ Why?: Because this appeals to my crackish sensibilities (I love sexual chemistry between a bad guy and a good guy, aka Foe Yay) and Nyx sounds like she’s going to be a serious badass. Also, ARCS OF IT EXIST. I will do any and all favors to get one. Call me~! (Er, email me. You know what I mean.)

10123237♡ Title: “The Inventor’s Secret”

♡ Author: Andrea Cremer

♡ Release Date: April 22, 2014 (North America)

♡ Publisher: Penguin

♡ Synopsis: 16-year-old Charlotte and her fellow refugees have scraped out an existence on the edge of Britain’s industrial empire. Though they live by the skin of their teeth they have their health (at least when they can find enough food and avoid the Imperial Labor Gatherers) and each other. When a new exile with no memory of his escape from the coastal cities or even his own name seeks shelter in their camp he brings new dangers with him and secrets about the terrible future that awaits all those who have struggled has to live free of the bonds of the empire’s Machineworks.

The Inventor’s Secret is the first book of a YA steampunk series set in an alternate nineteenth-century North America where the Revolutionary War never took place and the British Empire has expanded into a global juggernaut propelled by marvelous and horrible machinery.

♡ Why?: It’s no secret that I’m a huge Cremer fan, and I love steampunk/alternate history stories, so I’m hoping that this is going to be as awesome as the blurb says it’ll be. I am definitely loving that cover though. ❤

RoomiesASHLEIGH:

♡ Title: Roomies

♡ Author: Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando

♡ Release Date: December 24, 2013

♡ Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

♡ Synopsis: It’s time to meet your new roomie.

When East Coast native Elizabeth receives her freshman-year roommate assignment, she shoots off an e-mail to coordinate the basics: television, microwave, mini-fridge. That first note to San Franciscan Lauren sparks a series of e-mails that alters the landscape of each girl’s summer — and raises questions about how two girls who are so different will ever share a dorm room.

As the countdown to college begins, life at home becomes increasingly complex. With family relationships and childhood friendships strained by change, it suddenly seems that the only people Elizabeth and Lauren can rely on are the complicated new boys in their lives . . . and each other. Even though they’ve never met.

National Book Award finalist Sara Zarr and acclaimed author Tara Altebrando join forces for a novel about growing up, leaving home, and getting that one fateful e-mail that assigns your college roommate.

♡ Why?: Because it sounds like fun and it might wash the memory of my not-so-great roommates (one much worse than the other) from my brain. I could use that right about now. Actually, I could have used it when I moved out, but it’s better late than never!

New WoW“Waiting  On Wednesday” is a weekly event, hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

Here’s what we’re waiting on this Wednesday:

USAGI:

17449197♡ Title: “Unhinged (Splintered #2)”

♡ Author: AG Howard

♡ Release Date: January 7, 2014 (North America)

♡ Publisher: Abrams/Amulet

♡ Synopsis: Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she’s always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she’ll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

♡ Why?: I absolutely LOVED “Splintered” (seriously one of my favorite debuts of the year!) so I’m so, so happy there’s a sequel coming out. I can’t wait to meet these characters and this world all over again, and I’d probably give my firstborn for an ARC. Wink wink.

ASHLEIGH:

The Twice Lost♡ Title: The Twice Lost

♡ Author: Sarah Porter

♡ Release Date: July 2, 2013

♡ Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

♡ Synopsis: Mermaids have been sinking ships and drowning humans for centuries, and now the government is determined to put an end to the mermaid problem—by slaughtering all of them. Luce, a mermaid with exceptionally threatening abilities, becomes their number-one target, hunted as she flees down the coast toward San Francisco.

There she finds hundreds of mermaids living in exile under the docks of the bay. These are the Twice Lost: once-human girls lost first when a trauma turned them into mermaids, and lost a second time when they broke mermaid law and were rejected by their tribes. Luce is stunned when they elect her as their leader. But she won’t be their queen. She’ll be their general. And they will become the Twice Lost Army—because this is war.

♡ Why?: The first two books in Porter’s Lost Voices trilogy really surprised me with how creative and girl-centric they are! Waking Storms in particular took me by surprise with its brutal ending and I’m dying to see how it turns out.

13574417♡ Title: “Alienated”

♡ Author: Melissa Landers

♡ Release Date: February 4, 2014 (North America)

♡ Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

♡ Synopsis: Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L’eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

♡ Why?: This one should be interesting – I love the resurgence the of space opera/omg aliens genre within YA, so hopefully this one will be as fun as it sounds. I’m definitely willing to give it a shot. But 2014? Seriously?

ASHLEIGH:

Famous Last Words♡ Title: Famous Last Words

♡ Author: Jennifer Salvato Doktorski

♡ Release Date: July 2, 2013

♡ Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. BFYR

♡ Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old Samantha D’Angelo has death on the brain. Her summer internship at the local newspaper has her writing obituaries instead of soaking up the sun at the beach. Between Shelby, Sam’s boy-crazy best friend; her boss Harry, a true-blue newspaper man; and AJ, her fellow “intern scum” (aka the cute drummer for a band called Love Gas), Sam has her hands full. But once she figures out what—or who—is the best part of her summer, will she mess it all up?

As Sam learns her way around both the news room and the real world, she starts to make some momentous realizations about politics, ethics, her family, romance, and most important—herself.

♡ Why?: Because I was the newspaper geek in high school and when I see journalist-minded main characters, it’s almost an instant yes. I’m a little worried there will be slut-shaming, though. One of my friends read Doktorski’s other novel How My Summer Went Up in Flames and there was a good bit of it. Please none? Please?

15850937♡ Title: “Frozen”

♡ Author: Melissa de la Cruz, Michael Johnston

♡ Release Date: September 17, 2013 (North America)

♡ Publisher: Penguin

♡ Synopsis:Set in 111 C.D., one hundred and eleven years after a Catastrophic Disaster has wiped out 99% of humanity and left the earth covered in ice, this new series introduces readers to a ragtag group of friends and the dawning of a new time. The world of reason, of mathematics and science, is ending, and a new civilization is being born from the ice: a world of magic and mayhem, sorcerers and spellcraft.

♡ Why?: I’m pretty much a sucker for anything de la Cruz writes (well, at least since the “Blue Bloods” series) and this looks pretty awesome. I can’t wait for my ARC to get here! I really can’t wait to dig into this one, guys.

The Infinite Moment of Us♡ Title: The Infinite Moment of Us

♡ Author: Lauren Myracle

♡ Release Date: August 20, 2013

♡ Publisher: Amulet Books

♡ Synopsis: For as long as she can remember, Wren Gray’s goal has been to please her parents. But as high school graduation nears, so does an uncomfortable realization: Pleasing her parents once overlapped with pleasing herself, but now . . . not so much. Wren needs to honor her own desires, but how can she if she doesn’t even know what they are?

Charlie Parker, on the other hand, is painfully aware of his heart’s desire. A gentle boy with a troubled past, Charlie has loved Wren since the day he first saw her. But a girl like Wren would never fall for a guy like Charlie—at least not the sort of guy Charlie believes himself to be.

And yet certain things are written in the stars. And in the summer after high school, Wren and Charlie’s souls will collide. But souls are complicated, as are the bodies that house them . . .

Sexy, romantic, and oh-so-true to life, this is an unforgettable look at first love from one of young adult fiction’s greatest writers.

♡ Why?: Because it’s Lauren Myracle, that’s why! There’s a lot of room for error with this novel (it sounds like about five other novels I can recall and the “A has loved B from afar for a long time” trope creeps me out most of the time), but because she’s the badass who wrote Shine, I’ll trust her and give it a shot.

13641105♡ Title: “Parasite”

♡ Author: Mira Grant

♡ Release Date: October 29, 2013 (North America)

♡ Publisher: Orbit (Hachette)

♡ Synopsis: A decade in the future, humanity thrives in the absence of sickness and disease.

We owe our good health to a humble parasite – a genetically engineered tapeworm developed by the pioneering SymboGen Corporation. When implanted, the tapeworm protects us from illness, boosts our immune system – even secretes designer drugs. It’s been successful beyond the scientists’ wildest dreams. Now, years on, almost every human being has a SymboGen tapeworm living within them.

But these parasites are getting restless. They want their own lives… and will do anything to get them.

♡ Why?: I loved the “Newsflesh” series (and love that Grant continues to write novellas for it!), and this is the start of her new series. Hopefully it’ll be as awesomely creepy and yet full of pathos as the other was. Seriously pining for this one, guys!

♡ Release Date: September 10, 2013

Trapped in horrific circumstances, Rose finds hope in the impossible through the loyalty, bravery and friendship of her fellow prisoners. But will that be enough to endure the fate that’s in store for her?

Elizabeth Wein, author of the critically-acclaimed and best-selling Code Name Verity, delivers another stunning WWII thriller. The unforgettable story of Rose Justice is forged from heart-wrenching courage, resolve, and the slim, bright chance of survival.

♡ Why?: Because it’s by Elizabeth fucking Wein, who wrote the amazing Code Name Verity. I’m still fangirling over that book and I therefore need Rose Under Fire YESTERDAY.

♡ Author: Julie Kagawa

♡ Release Date: October 22, 2013 (North America)

♡ Publisher: Harlequin Teen

♡ Synopsis: IN THE REAL WORLD, WHEN YOU VANISH INTO THIN AIR FOR A WEEK, PEOPLE TEND TO NOTICE

After his unexpected journey into the lands of the fey, Ethan Chase just wants to get back to normal. Well, as “normal” as you can be when you see faeries every day of your life. Suddenly the former loner with the bad reputation has someone to try for-his girlfriend, Kenzie. Never mind that he’s forbidden to see her again.

But when your name is Ethan Chase and your sister is one of the most powerful faeries in the Nevernever, “normal” simply isn’t to be. For Ethan’s nephew, Keirran, is missing, and may be on the verge of doing something unthinkable in the name of saving his own love. Something that will fracture the human and faery worlds forever, and give rise to the dangerous fey known as the Forgotten. As Ethan’s and Keirran’s fates entwine and Keirran slips further into darkness, Ethan’s next choice may decide the fate of them all.

♡ Why?: More like, why not?  I really liked “Iron Prince”, so I’m hoping that this next book in the second/sequel “Iron Fey” series delivers. Keirran was kinda creepy to me in book one, so I’m pretty curious as to what he’s going to do next. Ugh October, y u so far away? I need this book and soon.

Outcast♡ Title: Outcast

♡ Author: Adrienne Kress

♡ Release Date: June 4, 2013

♡ Publisher: Diversion Books

♡ Synopsis: After six years of “angels” coming out of the sky and taking people from her town, 16-year-old Riley Carver has just about had it living with the constant fear. When one decides to terrorize her in her own backyard, it’s the final straw. She takes her mother’s shotgun and shoots the thing. So it’s dead. Or … not? In place of the creature she shot, is a guy. A really hot guy. A really hot alive and breathing guy. Oh, and he’s totally naked.

Not sure what to do, she drags his unconscious body to the tool shed and ties him up. After all, he’s an angel and they have tricks. When he regains consciousness she’s all set to interrogate him about why the angels come to her town, and how to get back her best friend (and almost boyfriend) Chris, who was taken the year before. But it turns out the naked guy in her shed is just as confused about everything as she is.

He thinks it’s 1956.

Set in the deep south, OUTCAST is a story of love, trust, and coming of age. It’s also a story about the supernatural, a girl with a strange sense of humor who’s got wicked aim, a greaser from the 50’s, and an army of misfits coming together for one purpose: To kick some serious angel ass.

♡ Why?: This book’s cover only just got revealed, but I loved Kress’s previous YA novel The Friday Society and this sounds like fun! A book is always more anticipated when it’s an upcoming release from an author you trust because you’ve read/loved their books already. Here’s hoping it rocks my socks off!

♡ Title: “Unbreakable”

♡ Author: Kami Garcia

♡ Release Date: October 1, 2013 (North America)

♡ Publisher: LBFYR

♡ Synopsis: I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

♡ Why?: I’m a stupidly big “Beautiful Creatures” fan, so I can’t wait to see what Garcia does on her own. Same for Stohl with “Icons”, which I’ll be getting to soon, but seriously, this sounds awesome, and I can’t wait to read it. And I’m also a sucker for demon stories, too. October, you’re a long way to wait, and I may just hit the pre-order button.

Ashleigh Paige:Canary

♡ Title: Canary

♡ Author: Rachele Alpine

♡ Release Date: August 1, 2013

♡ Publisher: Medallion Press

♡ Synopsis: Staying quiet will destroy her, but speaking up will destroy everyone.

Kate Franklin’s life changes for the better when her dad lands a job at Beacon Prep, an elite private school with one of the best basketball teams in the state. She begins to date a player on the team and quickly gets caught up in a world of idolatry and entitlement, learning that there are perks to being an athlete.

But those perks also come with a price. Another player takes his power too far and Kate is assaulted at a party. Although she knows she should speak out, her dad’s vehemently against it and so, like a canary sent into a mine to test toxicity levels and protect miners, Kate alone breathes the poisonous secrets to protect her dad and the team. The world that Kate was once welcomed into is now her worst enemy, and she must decide whether to stay silent or expose the corruption, destroying her father’s career and bringing down a town’s heroes.

♡ Why?: I followed the Jerry Sandusky trial closely from the time it became national news and I did the same with the Steubenville trial. The culture that Penn State and Steubenville had where sports were all that mattered and the people hurt by sports idols were forced into silence until someone forced the issue into the national spotlight terrify me and fascinate me in equal measure. A YA book that tries to cover it? Gotaa read it. I’ve had my eye on this book since May of last year and I’m glad to see the publication date crawling closer!
