Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
•Grab your current read
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Nothing about this room is real. If this were a party at home, the music would draw your eye to human musicians in the corner. Candles and soft lamps would light the room, and the wooden tables would be made of actual trees. People would be listening to each other, instead of checking to see who’s watching them.
Even the air here smells filtered and fake. The candles in the sconces do flicker, but they’re powered by a steady source. Hover trays weave among the guests, live invisible waiters are carrying drinks. The string quartet is only a hologram – perfect and infallible and exactly the same at every performance.
The lights snapped back on. My throat closed.
Two more bodies lay on the floor.
I used a handrail to get back on my feet. My clammy palm could hardly grip it. A few feet away, Underguard 1 was dead, the look of surprise still on his face.
I’d killed him. I’d killed an Underguard.
