Cover Reveal: “The Casual Vacancy” by JK Rowling, “Mila 2.0” by Debra Driza, and more!

COVER REVEALED!: “The Casual Vacancy”

AUTHOR: JK Rowling

OFFICIAL BLURB: When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?

COMMENTS: …Honestly, guys I’m pretty underwhelmed by this cover. Seriously? This is the best they could do? It reminds me of Eugenides’ “The Marriage Plot”.  Really pretty disappointed here. Here’s hoping the book will be awesome, though!

SLATED RELEASE DATE: MARCH 12th 2013 (HarperTeen – North America)

OFFICIAL BLURB: Pitched as a “Bourne Identity”-type sci-fi thriller about a teenage girl who discovers that she is a Mobile Intel Life-like Android, an experiment in artificial intelligence created by the U.S. government, and her scientist mother, who kidnapped her when she was found to have human emotions.

COMMENTS: ngl, Guys. I’m pretty excited about this one. As I recall, it was originally scheduled to be released at the end of this year but I guess it got pushed back. Not complaining at all – here’s hoping it’s REALLY awesome. And this cover! I’m definitely loving it. It reminds me a bit of “Ghost in the Machine 2.0”.

COVER REVEALED!: “Fragments (Partials #2)”

AUTHOR: Dan Wells

SLATED RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 26th 2013 (HarperTeen – North America)

OFFICIAL BLURB: Kira Walker has found the cure for RM, but the battle for the survival of humans and Partials is only just beginning. Kira has left East Meadow in a desperate search for clues as to who she is. That the Partials themselves hold the cure for RM in their blood cannot be a coincidence—it must be part of a larger plan, a plan that Kira knows she is a part of, a plan that could save both races. Her allies are Afa Demoux, an unhinged drifter and former employee of ParaGen, and Samm and Heron, the Partials who betrayed her and saved her life, the only ones who know her secret. But can she trust them?

Meanwhile, back on Long Island, what’s left of humanity is gearing up for war with the Partials, and Marcus knows his only hope is to delay them until Kira returns. But Kira’s journey will take her deep into the overgrown wasteland of postapocalyptic America, and they will both discover that their greatest enemy may be one they didn’t even know existed.

COMMENTS: LOVING this cover – I love the blue elements, and how it’s really following the cover of the first novel. This is another 2013 release I am RIDICULOUSLY excited about, and I can’t wait to get my hands on. I wonder what this enemy could be? More virii? Gene problems? Aliens? Whatever, just bring it, Wells!

COVER REVEALED!: “Echo (Soul Seekers #2)”

SLATED RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 13, 2012 (St. Martin’s Griffin/Macmillan – North America)

OFFICIAL BLURB: Daire Santos just saved her grandmother’s life—and her soul. But at a cost. The Richters, a dark family of sorcerers, have been let loose in the Lowerworld, and Daire and her boyfriend, Dace, must once again work together to find them before they upset the balance between good and evil, and destroy not only their small town in New Mexico, but the entire world.

As Daire and Dace’s relationship deepens, Dace’s evil brother Cade grows stronger than ever, building his power and forcing Daire to confront the horrifying prophecy that has brought them all together. One that will leave Daire no choice but to claim her true destiny as Seeker, but only by making an unthinkable sacrifice for the greater good of all.

COMMENTS: tbh, The first book didn’t blow me away as much as I’d hoped, but I like the idea of the evil twin doing all of the bad things, so let’s see how this goes. I’m willing to read the rest of the series. There’s two more after this, so it’ll be interesting to see if this ends up like the “Immortals” series where the final book was really almost completely unneeded, so we’ll see. LOVING this cover though.

  1. Huh. I did not expect something so plain for a JK Rowling book. I know it’s not Harry Potter, and it’s not geared towards kids/teens, but still. They are really relying on her name to sell this. I’m not positive I’m going to read it. I am not intrigued by the summary at all. My main thought was, “If this weren’t written by JKR would you even look twice at it?” And that answer is no. I guess I’ll probably wait to see what other people think.

And Alyson Noel always has really pretty covers, but I think the ones for this new series are the best so far.

    • I definitely agree, Merin – on both counts. You’ve got an excellent point about the JKR book – will people read it unless they look twice? I guess only time will tell.
