In My Mailbox ♡: Week 54 (the Wondercon 2012 edition)

What is In My Mailbox?
In My Mailbox was started in November of 2008. What it all came down to was this: I get books to read and then ultimately share my thoughts about with my readers. As much as I want to, I can’t possibly read every book I receive. Yet, I still wanted a way to feature those books on the blog, even though it might not be in the form of a review. Problem solved!

Week 54: Here’s what’s in my mailbox this week!

1. “Crucible of Gold (Temeraire #7)” by Naomi Novik (via Del Rey/Librarything – thanks, guys!)

2. “A Temptation of Angels” by Michelle Zink (via the author – and signed, too! Michelle, you’re far too good to me, and thanks for your postcard this week, too!)

3. “Uglies: Shay’s Story – Volume 1” by Scott Westerfeld (via Del Rey/Librarything! Thanks, guys!)

4. “Truth (XVI #2)” by Julia Karr (via ARC swap)

5. “Dogs: Bullets & Carnage – Volume 5 (English Translated Edition)” (bought)

NOT PICTURED:

6. “Elemental” by Emily White (via Spencer Hill Press – thanks!)

Hooray, my librarything winnings came in! I didn’t know I’d won “Crucible of Gold” but gave it a try and found that it wasn’t for me. The rest of this week’s haul was pretty awesome – I’m working on “Elemental” now and so far it’s pretty interesting – my thanks to Spencer Hill Press for sending me a copy, and to librarything/DelRey for sending me “Uglies” and “Crucible of Gold”! Also a huge hug to my bro Michelle Zink for sending me a fresh new signed finished copy of “Temptation of Angels”! It’s already on my shelf and damn, does it look nice there. As always, thanks to my partners at ARC swap, too! I better get reading!

♡ E-ARCs/GALLEYS/ONLINE PUBLISHER READING:

1. “The Lost Code” by Kevin Emerson (via Edelweiss/HarperTeen)

2. “Ember (Darkest London 0.5)” by Kristen Callihan (via NetGalley/Grand Central Publishing)

3. “Dark Kiss” by Michelle Rowen (via NetGalley/HarlequinTeen)

4. “Once (Eve #2)” by Anna Carey (via Edelweiss/HarperTeen)

5. “Unraveling” by Elizabeth Norris (via Edelweiss/HarperTeen)

6. “The Immortal Rules” by Julie Kagawa (via NetGalley/HarlequinTeen)

7. “Something Strange and Deadly” by Susan Dennard (via Edelweiss/HarperTeen)

8. “Magic Knight Rayearth: Omnibus II” by CLAMP (via NetGalley/Dark Horse Comics)

9. “Dollhouse: Epitaphs (collected version)” by Andrew Chambliss, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen (via NetGalley/Dark Horse Comics)

10. “Gate 7 – Volume 2” by CLAMP (via NetGalley/Dark Horse Comics)

Holy awesome e-galleys, Batman! Edelweiss is awesome (and if they’d get Random House to approve my requests, I’d love them even more), and Dark Horse on Netgalley this week was such a pleasant surprise – I didn’t think that they’d be putting up the “Dollhouse: Epitaphs” galley at all. So yay for all of them! Also, OMG FINALLY “THE IMMORTAL RULES”. I’ll just be here in this corner, fangirling until I pee myself (as Walter Bishop says, “just a squirt”). Thank you to Edelweiss and NetGalley and all of their publishing partners for being so wonderful this week!

♡ OTHER:

SWAG FROM WONDERCON! Including a “Dexter” lanyard/keychain (holding my badge, which Jane Espenson – who wrote for “Buffy”, “BSG”, “Caprica”, “Dollhouse”, “Once Upon a Time” and so many more! – signed for me sdljsdfljdfsasdg), a “Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)” lanyard/keychain, a button from Marvel/Legendary, a redeemable e-copy of the latest Avengers comic, the Wondercon program for 2012, two tickets from the “Fringe” autograph panel lottery (sadly, I didn’t even get close to winning), a signed picture from the wonderful Team Husbands (who are so very, very sweet!) and some other stuff.

This was the highlight of my week (nay, the last few months!). I was kind of hoping for more swag from WC, but I guess they’re saving it all for Comic Con this year (same company who does CC does WC), but it was a nice surprise that they were holding WC in my neighborhood this year. I wish they’d had more panels, though – but getting to see the “Fringe”, “Alcatraz”, and Jane Espenson panels were good enough for me. ❤ More than good enough, they were AWESOME. More coverage on the Jane Espenson/Team Husband panels coming up this week, so stay tuned!

♡ MAGAZINES:

Special Edition Cover #4 for “Game of Thrones: Season 2” for Entertainment Weekly (bought)

…featuring Jaime and Cersei Lannister! I was going to buy Dany’s cover, too (but I ran out of time!), but oh well, I guess I’m not a dragon but a lion after all. LOVE this cover though, so wonderful.

  1. I need a Dexter lanyard in my life.

Basically everything you got is awesome: DOGS, A Temptation of Angels, Unraveling, Crucible of Gold (I just recently got into the series and have since turned a co-worker on to it as well!), The Lost Code. Wow, wow, wow. So. Awesome.

    My IMM!

    • I was surprised when that became my con badge with the Dexter lanyard – I’m a ridiculously huge Dexter fan, so…it was a great thing to see so early (and I got there so very early!).

I couldn’t get into “Crucible of Gold”, sadly – the prose is a little to stilted for me, but I’m happy that you’re liking that series (so it seems). And yay for DOGS, definitely, since I couldn’t find the Japanese edition used at ALL here in the States, and the translation is good. 😀 Yay for fellow manga fans!

      Thanks for visiting!

  2. Fun IMM! I hadn’t realised there was another book to the Uglies series. hope you enjoy it. I read the first four and enjoyed them. The Immortal Rules is one I’ve got my eye on, I love Julie Kagawa’s writing in The Iron Fey series

    • I’ve been trying to get my hands on “Immortal Rules” since the ARCs were spotted in the wild a few months ago, tbh. I’m just happy to have it now.

And the new “Uglies” book is a graphic novel, so it’s not really a book in the traditional sense. It’s still really good though, and a very quick read. ❤

      Thanks for visiting!

  3. Tons of great books! I’m a little jealous you went to Wondercon. My old boss went to represent the library department where I used to work, so if I still worked there I could have gone too!

Out of all those books, I’m most excited for The Immortal Rules. Can’t wait to see Kagawa take on vampires 🙂

    • I was surprised that Wondercon was being held in SoCal this year – usually it’s up in San Francisco or in Seattle, so it was a pleasant surprise. 🙂

I’m excited for “Immortal Rules” too. I need to get to it ASAP! If you’re on NG, you should be able to get it with immediate approval from HarlequinTeen.

      Thanks for visiting! ❤

  4. I *really* need to get my hands on Truth! I have this big problem of forgetting what I need to pick up at the bookstore when I go…LOL!

    Thanks for stopping by mine!

    • I keep a notepad in my bag so whenever I’m at a bookstore (new or used) I know what I want or need. 😀 I’m incredibly neurotic like that, but it works.

      Thanks for visiting back! ❤

    • Unraveling does look pretty great and I’m hearing great things about it, so here’s hoping it won’t let me down. I love book signings, too – it makes everything more personal! ❤

      Thanks for visiting!

  5. I’d usually talk about the books you got but ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY!!! I want. I don’t think I can even get it in Germany, and if so, then probably nowhere in my crappy smalltown. *complains* MHEE!! XD

    Happy Reading!

    • I think you can still order a set of all four covers through the Entertainment Weekly site for $20 plus shipping. I remember seeing that on their site, and I think it’s still there so maybe you should check it out. ❤

I will! I just wish I'd been able to get the Dany cover, too. But Cersei Lannister is my spirit animal, so..it couldn't be helped.

    • Definitely put the “Uglies” series on your TBR shelf if you like dystopian stuff – it was one of the first YA dystopian series before the trend started. 🙂 I am enjoying my books, thank you!

      Thank you for visiting!

    • I think it was you who told me about Edelweiss, right? I never knew it was so awesome. Thank you for that!

And yeah, one week left! So excited! ❤

    • If you’re not on Edelweiss, you should be – it’s digital galley heaven! just google it and it should come up. 🙂

      Thanks for visiting back!

  6. Omgosh did you score the freebies this week!!! Nice haul! I love the graphic novels you got, too! I love anything Whedonverse. Now, the Fringe reference had me a little squeemish, tho ;P

Have you read Songs of Ice and Fire?? I’ve boycotted anything GRRM b/c he so lamely left us all hanging for so long between novels. But man, I wish I could afford HBO!!!

Have a great week! Thanks for visiting me!!! new follower
    -Kristin @myparahangover

    • I’ve actually finished all five ASOIAF books and now own season 1 of the series – I just love it that much. Plus, it wasn’t GRRM’s fault in terms of the last book being released – he was in publishing limbo for most of those five years between books. Poor guy. Here’s hoping that won’t happen again, and if it does, hopefully not as long as a time as it happened last time.

The freebees were pretty sad though compared to normal cons/CC – I was dismayed at how little the companies cared, tbh, since there were so few reps and stuff.

I’m following back. Thanks for visiting! And yay for a new Fringie! 😀

    • Yes, “Uglies: Shay’s Story” is a new set of stories based on the original series that’s from Shay’s POV and stuff we never saw happen but heard about later in the series. It’s quite good, so I highly recommend it! 😀

      Thanks for visiting!

    • I was quite happy to get them! It looks like you guys got a really good haul this week, yourselves! (Jealous of your hardcopy of “Something Strange”, not gonna lie!). Thank you for visiting, guys!

  7. YAY!! Are you or are you not incredibly excited to start reading Unraveling?? I sure am! x) Everyone I know who read it already has loved it so far, and I think that means that we’re supposed to love it too! 😉 Plus, I LOVE Michelle Zink! ❤ She's a fantastically sweet author and person, and it was so nice of her to send you a copy of A Temptation of Angels (I have one sitting on my shelf too and I'm so excited to read it!)

Amazing mailbox as always, Usagi! You have a lot of reading to do (a.k.a. a lot of sleeping to miss)!

P.S. The Immortal Rules = <3! That is all I have to say! 😉

    • I know, Michelle is so kind to everyone. I want to make something and send it to her. ❤ Something pretty! I'll figure something out. :3 And I hope "Unraveling" is as good as it is – there's nothing more disappointing than everyone touting a book, it seeming good and then ending up bad! So, here's hoping!

Your mailbox was pretty fantastic this week, too! I hope you enjoy your books – I know I loved "Grave Mercy" and "Shadow & Bone"! ❤

Thank you for visiting back, Mimirin!

  8. So awesome that you got Once (Eve #2). I loved the first book in that series. Can’t wait to read the 2nd.

    Happy Reading!
